What is Black Hat SEO? Measurements, tips and tools

PARTAGEZ

Black Hat SEO refers to search engine optimization methods that attempt to manipulate a website's ranking, usually by deceiving or circumventing Google's guidelines. Black Hat SEO techniques may provide short-term results, but in the long term result in penalties or exclusion from the Google index.

New call to action

What is behind the term “Black Hat SEO”?

While the term “Black Hat” has become widely used in hacker circles, it originally comes from an entirely different field. In duels in western films, the bad guys often wear a black hat, a “Black Hat”, while the good guys take on the challenges in white hats. This term can be described in many ways, but the idea of a murky and forbidden practice remains. For some, it is questionable methods for generating links ; for others, it is purely and simply spam. In any case, Black Hat tips aim to deviate from official search engine quality guidelines to challenge the competition.

When businesses launch a new site, they must undertake a long term work to hope to reach the top positions of Google, Bing or others. Building a good reputation and gaining the trust of users is essential to winning the race for the best places. The site must then send the right signals to Google so that it evaluates its pages positively. Among the Google SEO criteria, we find the credibility and reliability of the site, combined in what is called the Domain Trust.

With Black Hat SEO, the objective is to convince that your site is more relevant, more interesting and more important than it really is. If Google finds violations of the Google Search Essentials resulting from Black Hat SEO techniques, the measures can be severe: the pages of the site can be downgraded, or even banned from Google index. Thanks to Google's AI-based RankBrain system, black hat methods are increasingly detected, as they can no longer defeat the semantic analysis carried out by RankBrain. Indeed, the tool takes into account not only keywords, but also user behavior and context to better understand the relevance of content.

Black Hat SEO Techniques

An important practice in SEO is optimization offpage. The objective is then to promote your site from the outside by acquiring links from third parties. Indeed, any link from an external page to its site is perceived by Google as a kind of recommendation. The race for links is therefore on! Google does not object, if the backlinks or backlinks are generated naturally, for example by being slipped into quality content or by appearing in articles shared by Internet users.

Other practices aim to achieve ranking results without investing time or money in content marketing or social media marketing. Below are some of the most common Black Hat SEO metrics.

Satellite pages or doorway pages

So-called satellite pages are pages optimized specifically for search engines, but invisible to users. These orphan pages will then, for example, be full of keywords of interest to Google. The Internet user never sees them because he is directly redirected to another page. The objective is to increase the number of links of the real page and thus improve its positioning. Although this technique was previously quite widespread, it has now been abandoned, with Google now recognizing satellite pages as abusive practices.

Cloaking

The use of cloaking allows you to hide two different websites under the same URL, one for search engines, the other for real users. A script allows an effect to identify whether it is a visitor or a robot. The robot displays a page dedicated to optimizing SEO, containing a lot of text and keywords. The page intended for the Internet user is completely different, it is more elaborate: it generally contains more multimedia elements such as videos. This is explained by the fact that indexing is mainly done from texts. As the other elements are almost invisible to the crawler, they are replaced on cloaking pages by SEO text. However, this practice is now easily detected by Google and can lead to your site being blacklisted.

Buying links

Here's a Black Hat tip still used: artificial link building through link buying. As the name implies, backlinks are not generated naturally but purchased. The goal is once again tooptimize your site by multiplying links. Google nevertheless attaches great importance to natural links, which come from recent content with high added value. The search engine's rules prohibit the sale, purchase, exchange and rental of links: if the deception is discovered, the risk is to see your page drop in the search results or to be, once again, excluded from the index.

Private blog networks (PBNs) are particularly risky. These are link networks artificially created for the sole purpose of generating backlinks. In link buying, we also find what has been called Russian links. These are cheap links from abroad, most often from Russia. Of course, Google also penalizes these purchases.

Keyword multiplication

Keyword stuffing (Keyword-stuffing in English) corresponding to over-optimize the number of keywords. The technique consists of placing as many keywords as possible in a text so that it appears relevant to Google. It now dates from the beginnings of natural referencing and no longer has much effect. Thanks to numerous updates to Google's algorithms, websites with an excessive number of keywords can be quickly filtered and are then punished.

Hidden content

This classic, which consists of hide text or linkslost speed. If the technique worked before, it is now rarely used. The trick was to hide relevant keywords, for example by writing them in white on a white background. Thus, without the Internet user having to feel irritated by a massive use of keywords, the search engine was challenged. Links could be hidden in the same way by being inserted over discrete characters (e.g. a hyphen). Since then, Google has discovered these passages of text and included the practice in its list of abusive techniques.

Thin AI content and AI spam

With the emergence of generative AI tools, the world of search engine manipulation has also changed. The so-called pages thin AI pages (light content created by AI) are becoming more and more common. This refers to websites whose content was created using artificial intelligence, but which provide little added value to users. Although these pages are produced quickly, they generally consist of only superficial and meaningless text without in-depth information.

Google reacted to this trend in a targeted manner with several algorithm updates and increasingly reliably identifies AI-generated spam content. Such pages risk a significant devaluation in the ranking, or even complete exclusion from the index. Again, what seems simple in the short term can be very damaging in the long term.

Optimize your site while keeping your hands clean

What you need to remember: Black Hat SEO practices certainly provide attractive results in the short term, but they present a risk in the long term. Indeed, Google sooner or later ends up discovering these abuses.

THE sanctions, called penalties by Google, are very variable: downgrading of one place on search engines, drop of 30 ranks or even complete disappearance from the index. Once penalized and demoted, sites have great difficulty regaining the first pages of results and even more so the first places.

For long-term strategies, it is good to stick to the guidelines and respect good SEO practices. However, adopting White Hat SEO techniques and complying with all guidelines are not easy. There is therefore a gray area, which we call Gray Hat : here we use the maximum of SEO practices available given that Google does not systematically sanction all attempts to create links and improve its ranking. Gray Hat SEO is a balancing act, where we rely on methods which are not formally recommended but for which a sanction is not to be feared. Online stores and agencies specializing in natural referencing in the majority of cases orient themselves in this gray area.

Note

A sustainable approach to SEO doesn't mean giving up on modern technology. On the contrary, more and more businesses are also relying on AI-based SEO analysis to optimize their content in an efficient and data-driven manner. Tools help rank relevant topics, improve keyword coverage, and target content to search intent. Instead of relying on manipulative link building or over-optimized texts, informative content and added value for the user thus gain importance.
