Plone: the accessible CMS

PARTAGEZ

Plone is a highly secure, flexible and accessible enterprise CMS based on Python. Thanks to its modern architecture, its React Volto frontend and its powerful workflows, Plone CMS is suitable for organizations, administrations and businesses that wish to carry out complex, sustainable and accessible web projects.

The architecture of the Plone CMS

Plone is one of the open source CMS the oldest and is among the solutions technically the most advanced of the market. The system is based on Python, Zope and the object-oriented database ZODB, in which contents, structures and metadata are managed efficiently. The current version, Plone 6, is fully based on Python 3, modern security mechanisms and a flexible WSGI architecture, replacing the older ZServer model.

For templating, Zope uses the proprietary templating language Template Attribute Language (TAL)which allows you to generate Zope Page Templates (ZPT). These produce clean, validateable markup, while clearly separating frontend and backend logic. Recent installations of Plone often rely on the Volto frontend, a headless interface based on React and powered by the Plone REST API, which allows you to design modern, component-oriented web interfaces.

To operate Plone 6 in production, a server with SSH or console access is necessary because Plone consists of several processes and is installed on the server side. Current deployments are based on an architecture combining a WSGI-based Plone backend and a React Volto frontend. It must therefore be possible to run Python services, Node.js processes and, depending on the needs, search or caching services.

An accessible CMS

Another feature that sets Plone apart from other open source content management systems is its strong commitment to accessible web design. In its standard configuration, the Plone CMS already meets many WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 requirements at level AA. Thanks to semantically correct HTML, clear navigation structures, correctly implemented marker roles, avoidance links, contrast options and keyboard navigation, Plone CMS is particularly suitable for public institutions and organizations with high accessibility requirements.

Since June 28, 2025, the digital accessibility law has also required many private companies to offer accessible online products and services. This concerns in particular online stores, customer service portals, digital contracts and mobile applications. Plone offers a solid basis for meeting these obligations: standard themes comply with WCAG, the Volto frontend is optimized for current accessibility tests and content can be structured, highlighted and checked for accessibility.

Overview of important Plone features

In addition to its expansion possibilities and excellent accessibility capabilities, the following features are an integral part of the Plone CMS:

  • Modern frontend: choice between the React-based Volto frontend and the classic Plone UI
  • High security: one of the safest enterprise CMS, with strict security rules
  • Multilingualism: integrated translation management for international web projects
  • Complete permissions system: flexible role, rights and workflow structures for complex organizations
  • Version management: automatic history, locking in case of simultaneous modifications and conflict alerts
  • HTML5 accessible: Semantically correct and WCAG-compliant markup by default
  • Integrated search: Powerful full-text search with filtering and metadata support
  • REST API: interface for headless architectures, external applications and microservices
  • Great scalability: support for clustering, caching, ZODB sharding and load balancing
  • Responsive themes: Plone templates and templates optimized for mobile devices

Useful extensions for Plone

On the GitHub development platform, many useful Plone apps, plugins, and templates are grouped under Plone Collective. You will also find them in the download section of the official website of Plonewhere it is also possible to download the current version of the content management system. For Plone 6, the following extensions are particularly relevant:

Some older plugins like Plone SEO or Bootstrap themes are no longer recommended with Plone 6, as Volto already integrates modern SEO features, structured data and Open Graph configuration.

In summary: Plone as a reliable enterprise CMS

In 2025, Plone is technically much more advanced than in its previous versions: the transition to Python 3, the integration of the Volto frontend and a modern API architecture make the system efficient, flexible and attractive for current Web projects. Thanks to its high level of security, robust workflow engine and strong commitment to accessibility, Plone is particularly suitable for administrations, universities, non-profit organizations as well as companies with high requirements in terms of data protection, structuring and accessibility.

The combination of a stable backend with a modern React frontend makes Plone an accessible CMS particularly suitable for complex and long-lasting web projects.
