OpenNebula vs CloudStack: comparison of Cloud solutions

OpenNebula and CloudStack are two open source platforms dedicated to managing virtualization and Cloud environments. Both allow companies to create their own private or hybrid clouds. However, they are clearly distinguished by their architecture, their mode of administration and their typical use scenarios.

What are the areas of use for OpenNebula and CloudStack?

Both OpenNebula and CloudStack are used to centrally manage virtual machines, networks and storage to build a cloud infrastructure. Both systems are primarily aimed at businesses and organizations that wish to exploit their own IT resourcesrather than relying solely on external cloud providers. These platforms are typically used to virtualize internal server infrastructures or provide development and testing environments. Hosts also use them to offer their customers virtual servers or complete Cloud solutions.

OpenNebula is particularly designed to manage virtualization in the simplest way possible and efficiently leverage existing infrastructure. It is often used as a lightweight alternative to more complex cloud platforms. OpenNebula can be used for private clouds or small data centers, where stability and simple administration are important.

CloudStack, on the other hand, was initially developed for large cloud providers and focuses primarily on scalability. It allows you to set up complex Cloud environments with many users as well as automated processes. CloudStack deploys its full potential in infrastructures close to a public Cloud. This allows businesses to offer extensive self-service portals for virtual machines. What are the system requirements of OpenNebula and CloudStack?

OpenNebula and CloudStack are generally installed on Linux servers and allow you to manage a virtualization environment from a central interface. Both platforms are primarily designed to run on physical servers, also called bare metal servers, but can be operated in existing virtualization environments. Typically, these installations consist of a central management server and several hosts on which the virtual machines run.

OpenNebula is considered more resource efficient and can already be used in small server farms. A central management server with several virtualization hosts is often sufficient. The platform supports KVM, VMware or LXC as virtualization technologies. OpenNebula can thus be easily integrated into an existing infrastructure. For small laboratory environments, the system can even operate with just a few servers.

CloudStack imposes higher requirements on planning and infrastructure. Multiple management components are typically used to ensure fault tolerance. KVM, VMware and XenServer/XCP-ng are notably supported. CloudStack relies on a more structured architecture with zones, pods, clusters and hosts, which requires additional planning. Its exploitation is therefore particularly relevant when several servers are already available. In large environments, CloudStack can be scaled very efficiently.

What are the main features of OpenNebula and CloudStack?

OpenNebula and CloudStack follow different approaches to setting up a Cloud platform. OpenNebula focuses on simple administration and a more compact architecture, while CloudStack focuses on scalability and extensive cloud functions. Depending on the needs, one or the other solution may therefore be more suitable.

Architecture and complexity

OpenNebula is based on a relatively simple architecture with few central components. The system can therefore be installed more quickly and is easier to maintain. Administration teams generally maintain a good overview of the infrastructure. This is a major asset, especially for small teams. Changes can be implemented without significant effort.

CloudStack uses a more structured architecture with multiple tiers, like zones, pods, and clusters. This structure makes it easier to operate large Cloud environments. However, it increases the complexity of the implementation. Administrators therefore need to become more familiar with the system. In return, CloudStack offers more possibilities for organizing large infrastructures.

Another important aspect is the multi-tenant managementthat is to say the management of several clients, organizations or projects on the same platform. CloudStack has a hierarchical model of accounts and domains that helps completely isolate different groups of users and customers. OpenNebula offers multi-tenancy through projects, access rules, quotas and virtual data centers, but with a different approach than CloudStack.

Use and administration

OpenNebula offers a relatively clean web interface for managing virtual machines and resources. Many tasks can be performed directly through the GUI. Even small teams can operate the system without a long getting started phase. The configuration remains generally easy to understand. Automations are possible, but they are not always at the forefront.

CloudStack also offers a web interface, but is aimed more at a Cloud operation with multiple user roles. In addition to administrators, end users can also create and manage their own virtual machines. The system is therefore self-service oriented. Many features are already integrated. CloudStack is therefore well suited to service-oriented infrastructures. The solution can also offer interfaces compatible with certain Amazon Web Services (AWS) APIs. It is thus possible to use tools or automations initially developed for AWS environments. These interfaces particularly facilitate hybrid Cloud environments or migrations between different Cloud platforms.

Note

CloudStack offers integrated network services such as virtual routers, VLAN isolation, firewalls or load balancing. It also allows you to create complex, multi-level Cloud networks. These features particularly facilitate the operation of large Cloud platforms with numerous virtual machines.

Scalability

OpenNebula works particularly well in small to medium-sized environments with a limited number of servers. The solution can scale in medium-sized environments; the exact order of magnitude depends heavily on workloads, storage, and networking. The emphasis is on stability and efficient use of resources. However, for very large cloud environments, a higher level of manual planning is still necessary, even with OpenNebula.

CloudStack was specially developed for large Cloud platforms. New servers can be added in a structured manner. Automation plays an important role here. Hosting providers, in particular, benefit from the scalability of the solution.

Usage scenarios

OpenNebula is best suited for small to large enterprises, research institutions, and data centers. Internal IT departments also benefit from its relatively simple administration. The system is ideal when the main objective is tooperate your own virtual machines. The maintenance effort remains limited. OpenNebula is therefore often chosen as an alternative to more complex Cloud platforms.

CloudStack is particularly suitable for cloud providers and large organizations. The system supports complex user structures and automated resource provisioning. Customer accounts or members of an organization can create virtual machines themselves. The result is an environment close to a public Cloud or a private Cloud. Very large installations particularly benefit from CloudStack features.

What are the other alternatives to OpenNebula and CloudStack?

Besides OpenNebula and CloudStack, there are other platforms for setting up your own Cloud infrastructure:

  • Proxmox: Proxmox is a well-known alternative, often used for small virtualization environments. In comparison to OpenNebula, Proxmox is simpler to configure and more focused on individual server clusters.
  • OpenStack: OpenStack is another important platform, considered a particularly comprehensive Cloud solution. In comparison, OpenNebula is lighter and easier to operate. OpenStack offers many features, but also requires significantly more effort to install and maintain.
