OpenClaw: what server options exist?
Basically, OpenClaw is very flexible when it comes to the operating environment. The following modern operating systems are officially supported:
- Linux Kernel 5.4 or newer
- macOS from version 13
- Windows 10 or later
Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora are particularly well tested and widely used in production. This broad support allows an OpenClaw server to be run both locally and on most servers in data centers.
For accommodation, several server models taken into account:
- Bare Metal Servers: Dedicated physical servers offering maximum performance and full control over hardware and configuration. They are suitable for production environments with strong security requirements or resource-intensive AI agents.
- Cloud VM: Virtual machines in public cloud environments enabling flexible scalability and rapid deployment. Resources can be dynamically adjusted as needed, making them suitable for varying workloads.
- Virtual Private Server (VPS): virtualized servers with defined resources, suitable for small projects or test environments. They offer less flexibility than Cloud VMs, but are simpler to manage and often more economical.
- Container platforms: environments like Docker or Kubernetes allowing modular and portable deployment of OpenClaw. They are particularly suited to extensible architectures and automated DevOps flows.
Note
OpenClaw may have broad access to systems, files and credentials. Third-party extensions may contain security risks and lead to data leaks. It is therefore recommended to use an isolated environment, for example via Docker containers, to separate processes and reduce API key risks.
OpenClaw server: data center or home hosting?
The choice between running an OpenClaw server on your own network or in a data center mainly depends on the use case, the load and the desired level of professionalization.
Home accommodation
Running your own server at home may seem attractive at first: total control, no recurring Cloud costs and maximum sovereignty over data.
For typical operation of an OpenClaw server with an external language model, simple hardware configurations are often sufficient: 2–4 GB of RAM and 1–2 vCPUs are a realistic starting point for testing or occasional use.
On the other hand, if local models or continuous high loads are used, the requirements for CPU, RAM and GPU increase sharply, as do the acquisition costs:
- Stable continuous operation: approximately 2–4 CPU cores and 8–16 GB of RAM with 40–80 GB of SSD can handle long sessions, multiple integrations, and moderate workloads in production.
- Productive / team configuration: For collaborative use or parallel tasks, it is recommended to have at least 4 CPU cores and 16–64 GB of RAM with a fast SSD.
- High-end and local models: For large models or GPU-accelerated inference, dedicated graphics cards or memory-intensive systems are required, typically available through specialized hardware or Cloud GPU instances.
In addition to computing power, network connectivity is essential : Outbound HTTPS connections (port 443) are required and, in case of external access, inbound connections with domain and TLS must be configured.
When operating 24/7, recurring electricity costs are added. Depending on the hardware (around 20–40 watts for economical systems or more than 100 watts for powerful configurations), annual costs can vary from a few dozen to several hundred euros. Added to this are cooling, maintenance, spare parts and administration costs.

Data center hosting
Data center servers are available on a monthly subscription basis and often cost little more than just the electricity costs of a thrifty home server, but with no upfront investment, no maintenance and reduced risk of outage. These environments are particularly suitable when the OpenClaw server must be permanently accessiblefor example for bots, webhooks or internal automation processes. Professional data centers offer redundant power, stable network connectivity and IP addresses. Backups, snapshots and scaling can generally be implemented easily.
In case of increasing requirements, more complex cloud configurations with containerization or orchestration come into play, for example during an OpenClaw-Docker installation. In these cases, costs increase based on redundancy and load.
You then pay not only for computing power, but also for availability, scalability and reduced administration overhead. Bare metal servers dedicated to data centers are particularly suitable in cases of permanent high load, GPU requirements or regulatory requirements.

OpenClaw Server: What are the requirements for hosting?
In a direct comparison, a clear hierarchy emerges: while simple VPS solutions are often, in terms of price, at the level of the electricity costs of a home server, professional enterprise-level architectures are significantly more expensive. In return, they offer more predictable availability, scalability and operational security. The choice is therefore not so much a matter of computing power alone as of the desired level of security, availability and organization.
