Multi-Cloud refers to the use of cloud services from multiple providers to combine resources, performance and functionality as needed. This approach provides more flexibility, improves resilience and helps optimize performance and costs. What is multi-cloud?

Multi-Cloud refers tosimultaneous use of cloud services from multiple providers to flexibly distribute workloads, data and computing resources across different platforms. Different Cloud models such as private Cloud or public Cloud can thus be used in parallel with different providers. The objective is to choose, depending on the task, the most suitable Cloud solution in order to optimize performance, costs, security and compliance.

It is important to distinguish this concept from that of Hybrid Cloud. A hybrid cloud combines a private cloud or internal infrastructure with at least one public cloud. These environments are integrated and jointly managed, allowing data and workloads to be moved between them. Multi-Cloud, on the other hand, describes the parallel use of several Cloud services from different providers or models, without necessarily being directly integrated, to use the most suitable platform according to your needs.

In a multi-Cloud architecture, several Cloud services from different providers are used simultaneously within the same infrastructure.

The idea behind this approach is that cloud services from different providers cover varied needs. While solution A offers, for example, large storage capacity and high computing power, solution B can stand out with enhanced data security and advanced compliance features. With a multi-cloud strategy, there is no need to choose between these options: each task can be executed in the most appropriate cloud environment, while managing all services in a common organizational structure.

For a multi-cloud environment to work effectively, services and applications must be carefully coordinated and managed. The central tasks include the following:

  • Monitoring and management different Cloud resources
  • Data exchange between clouds
  • Consistent management of authorizations and identities
  • AI-assisted orchestrationto automatically coordinate resources, workloads and security policies across multiple Clouds
  • Centralized identity, policy, and encryption mechanismsin order to guarantee a consistent level of security and to comply with regulatory requirements such as the GDPR or compliance obligations specific to certain sectors

Without coordinated management of multiple environments, the complexity of cloud computing can quickly increase, as different APIs, tools and security models must be harmonized.

When is a multi-Cloud strategy relevant?

There is no fixed rule regarding the simultaneous use of multiple Cloud services. In practice, anyone who uses services from different Cloud providers already uses several Clouds, for example different email or storage services. However, this type of daily use does not correspond to the concept of multi-Cloud in the professional sense.

In a professional IT context, multi-Cloud refers to a coordinated and strategic use Cloud services from multiple providers. Workloads, data and services are distributed in a targeted manner and thus make it possible to exploit the specific strengths of each Cloud platform.

Multi-Cloud is mainly aimed at organizations that operate internal or external Cloud infrastructures and wish to use different Cloud services in parallel. The objective is to better meet requirements such as flexibility, performance, high availability or regulatory compliance. This approach generally requires structured coordination and multi-Cloud management, as different platforms, APIs and security policies need to be harmonized.

When these conditions are met, several reasons can justify the use of multi-Cloud:

  • Optimization of IT infrastructure: Businesses can take advantage of the benefits offered by different cloud providers and, through cloud hosting, optimize the computing power, storage space and maintenance efforts of their IT infrastructure.
  • Optimal software support: If a business uses multiple services designed to work with different vendors’ systems (for example, applications optimized for Amazon, Google or Microsoft environments), a multi-cloud strategy allows it to run each of them under optimal conditions.
  • Data security: sensitive data can be processed separately on infrastructures meeting specific security requirements.
  • Failure prevention and business continuity: By distributing data and processes across multiple clouds, businesses reduce the risk of interruption in the event of a provider outage and improve the resilience of their infrastructure.
