What is Gaia-X?

Gaia-X is a European initiative aimed at creating a European digital ecosystem Launched in 2020 and based on open source. A large part of the current digital infrastructure, web services, software developments, internet standards is controlled from Silicon Valley; Or at least from the United States. So far, Europe has hardly played a role in this area. With the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), the EU has made an (controversial) attempt to to shape the internet according to his ideas. Gaia-X is one more step towards a European data economy: the objective is an exchange of data in which all the actors involved keep the sovereignty over their data.

Gaia-X: the current situation

After a rather difficult start in 2020, the Gaia-X Project made a series of progress. Since then, participants can use their own Framework Trust. It is a kind of set of rules that allows Define how the data can be exchanged and sent in complete safety between different services. The Loire version, presented in 2024 at the official Gaia-X summit, provides companies for the first time technical tools intended to help them implement GAIA-X standards. They automate compliance with compliance directives.

As part of several projects, GAIA-X technology is tested in depth in different sectors including agriculture, automotive industry and energy. Since 2021, more than 200 million euros in subsidies have contributed to these projects and therefore to the development of theEuropean digital ecosystem. Gaia-X does not only extend only inside Europe: in addition to the GAIA-X regional hubs in Germany, France or Switzerland, GAIA-X concepts have also been tested in Japan or Korea.

There Gaia-X Academy Newly created aims to help developers integrate GAIA-X into their systems, by providing them with various training courses and additional learning equipment.

Gaia-X's objectives

When it comes to the Gaia-X Project in the media, the term ofdata infrastructure often comes back. This is the interaction between services, technical conditions and know-how. It is therefore not a single concrete measure, even if the Cloud Computing is at the heart of the project.

Gaia-X's main objective is Strengthen European digital economy And to achieve independence from digital infrastructure of other global players such as the United States or China. A large part of European companies greatly depend on IT infrastructure of a few large companies such as Google, Microsoft or Amazon Web Services: these hyperscalers of the cloud rarely corresponds to European ideas in terms of data protection and transparency, which is why GAIA-X must ensure data sovereignty.

Independence vis-à-vis large groups thanks to a European alternative is equivalent to economic development. To be able to compete with these large companies, European companies should and must be reinforced. To this end, the actors around Gaia-X wish to make regulations less restrictive and facilitate funding. It should promote innovation and increase the desire to invest. On the other hand, they wish to create more uniform rules so that companies located outside the EU also take more account of consumer protection, for example. This should create some equality.

Although GAIA-X is mainly a commercial development project, user experience must also be improved by developments. From a B2B perspective, companies are among the main beneficiaries of this digital infrastructure. But consumers, in the sense of B2C, can also benefit from Gaia-X. To this end, transparency, data protection, security and conviviality should be among the most important characteristics of the new data infrastructure.

Gaia-X also wants to support cooperation between the various actors. The data must be accessible as freely as possible, so that economics, science and society can benefit from it. Areas such as Machine learning And artificial intelligence (AI) must also be open to small and medium -sized enterprises, creating and providing common data pools for analysis, AI training and many other things. An approach decentralized must ensure stability and security.

In summary, Gaia-X aims to improve the following points:

  • business development
  • Data protection
  • The spirit of innovation
  • Internet security
  • Open data (decentralized)
  • transparency
  • independence
  • Cooperation possibilities
  • conviviality
  • Modularity and interoperability
  • Free access to the market

The actors behind Gaia-X

Behind Gaia-X is a broad alliance of politics, business, industry and science. The project is carried out by the French and German governments which, in this case, have a public interest in being innovative and competitive in the future. In addition, more than 300 companies (large companies and SMEs) and organizations from many different countries and sectors participate in Gaia-X. Of Large industrial companies French, such as EDF, OVH Cloud, Safran, SAP and Orange, in particular, have supported the project from the start. The companies that are Amazon, Alibaba and Google have also participated since 2021 as « day 1 » members.

In addition to economic interests, the project is however characterized by a scientific approach. The Fraunhofer Aisec Institute or the German Aerospace Center participate in the project, as is the health sector in the form of the charity of Berlin and the German Center for Research on Heidelberg Cancer.

Note

Gaia-X is a European project, but he was born in Germany. However, he quickly integrated France into the discussions, which is why Bruno Le Maire, then Minister of the Economy and Finance, and Peter Altmaier, German Federal Minister of Economy and Energy, announced on June 4, 2020 the creation of a governance entity, in order to develop Gaia-X.

The Cloud in the heart of the Gaia-X Project

THE Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection German clearly placed Cloud Computing in the foreground of Gaia-X's efforts. The supply of storage space and calculation power becomes more and more important in the context of digitization. It is not logical (or economical) for small and medium -sized enterprises to create their own data center. Instead, you put your data in the hands of other people and that is exactly what Gaia-X aims to do in the future, in a safer and more transparent way.

Currently, the Business and industry digitization is still often prevented by the fact that companies must give their sensitive data to a single supplier and thus become dependent on this supplier. If a supplier is no longer able to offer or provide its service (for example due to political tensions), considerable damage and time is expected. In addition, the question of data protection has not been sufficiently clarified, in particular in the case of important services from non -European countries.

With his decentralized and transparent approach, Gaia-X tries to avoid the problem of dependence. The exchange of data between the different cloud service providers must be greatly simplified. Open interfaces, open source solutions and international standards should make interoperability possible. However, GAIA-X is not responsible for creating a product competitor to other hyperscalers, which already provide a horizontal scaling in the field of cloud computing. Rather, it is a question of establishing a structure which also simplifies the exchange between companies and which thus creates and uses synergy effects.
