Choosing the size of a logo: dimension and resolution

PARTAGEZ

Logo size depends on how it will be used: a logo can be designed for digital display on different platforms or for printing. We show you the most common dimensions and resolutions.

Why is logo size important?

Your logo serves as a sign for your own brand and your corporate identity. One of the oldest logos is that of Coca-Cola, at the time it only appeared on bottles and advertising panels. Today, in the digital age, logos must be able to adapt to multiple supports : on websites, social networks or for printing on business cards, advertising posters and flyers.

You may have already wondered what a good logo looks like. When you create a logo, it’s not just the design and colors that matter: the logo should be designed in a way that can be resized so that the display remains optimal for each use.

Choosing the size of a logo: the basics to know

In order to find the right logo size for your desired use, three parameters are essential:

  • Image dimensions : For digital displays, dimensions are indicated in pixels. Length units such as millimeters or centimeters are generally used to measure the size of a logo for printing.
  • Image resolution : Image quality or dot density (resolution) is indicated in PPI (Pixel per inch). For a logo to print, a resolution of 300 PPI is recommended. You also need to consider the dimensions of the image.
  • File size : the dimensions and quality of the image influence the size of the file, which contains the logo. The larger and higher resolution the image, the larger the file will be. For example, some logo file formats can be compressed. For digital displays, it is preferable to choose a lightweight image format, that is, one that requires as little storage space as possible.

After designing your logo, you will need to choose the appropriate size. Then think about the following aspects:

  • Sizing : whether horizontal, vertical or square, the orientation and sizing of your logo must remain uniform. The logo must be able to adapt to different platforms. Consistently correct display of your logo allows it to be recognized on all occasions.
  • File formats : The file format is different depending on whether the logo is intended for digital display (popular file formats: SVG, PDF, PNG and JPG) or for printing (EPS, PDF or JPG).
  • Possibilities for expansion and reduction : if a logo must be able to be resized and reformatted without loss, the image must be vector. We use formats such as SVG, PDF or EPS for this. Whether a large enlargement in the form of an advertising poster or a reduction in the form of a business card or profile photo, the resolution remains unchanged with a vector file.
  • Simplicity above all : a logo should not be overloaded with details, but rather focus on the essentials. Favor a simple design and ensure that the representation of the logo is optimal, whatever its size.
  • Design flexibility : the design of the logo must be able to be modified depending on the intended use. For example, you can get away with a simple symbol for a profile picture, while more elaborate logos can be used for advertising posters or website banners.
  • Better too big than too small : Set the size of the logo in an appropriate resolution from the start. It is difficult to enlarge logos that are too small without compromising quality and clarity.

Logo size for websites

The logo should always appear on a company or brand’s website. It serves as a sort of welcome message and helps create recognition value. It is usually at the top of the web page, but also as a favicon in the browser tab. Here too, it is important that the design of the logo corresponds to the visual identity of the company. To do this, use harmonious logo colors in accordance with your domain and the message you want to convey. The logo must always be easily recognizable and readable.

To choose the size of your logo, you must first know what it will be used for and how it will be integrated. Here you will find the standard sizes for each use:

Vertical image (desktop) :

160 x 160 pixels

Horizontal image (moving) :

250 x 250 pixels

350 x 75 pixels

400 x 100 pixels

Full banner :

468 x 60 pixels

Logo size for favicons

If you want to embed logos as a favicon, the following sizes are recommended:

16 x 16 pixels

32 x 32 pixels

48 x 48 pixels

Is your logo more horizontal or vertical? For favicons, however, you must take into account the square dimensions of the image.

  • Cups (325 ml) : 180 x 80 mm
  • Caps : approx. 7.5 to 9 cm wide

  • Envelope :110 x 220 mm (DL format, long DIN format)
