papaya: the CMS for professionals

PARTAGEZ

The papaya CMS is optimized for extensive web projects and is primarily aimed at businesses and organizations. It is based on a modular structure and offers many flexible functions, which can be adapted individually. Thanks to this adaptability, the content management system is particularly suitable for the development of accessible web offerings.

CMS papaya: performance and architecture

In its early days, the papaya CMS was distributed as commercial software, but since 2005 it has been open source And free. Papaya Software GmbH, based in Cologne, is responsible for the development of the program and provides users with regular updates. In addition to the creation of classic websites, the software can also be used as an application development framework for individual applications, including web applications, as well as for the implementation of Intranet and Extranet projects.

The papaya CMS is developed in PHP and can be used with MySQL, SQLite and PostgreSQL databases. The system is highly scalable and offers very good performance. These are mainly based on the extended caching mechanism of the CMS: when caching content in XML format, queries to the database are eliminated, so that the content only needs to be converted into the target format, such as HTML or PDF.

When this flexibility of output formats is not required, the papaya CMS can also skip this conversion and directly cache the contents as static HTML or PDF files. It is also possible to define with precision to the second the duration of retention of web content in the cache.

Note

The current version of the papaya CMS is 6.15.3. The last update was published on 04/06/2022. As of today, there is no public information indicating that further updates or new versions are planned.

CMS papaya: diversity of formats

As in many other CMS, the frontend and backend are separated in the papaya CMS. Website content, stored as XML files in the backend, is transformed on the frontend using XSLT templates. Through the use of XSLT, an open XML-based language, papaya templates can provide a wide variety of text formats, for example HTML, news feeds or PDF.

The basic version of the system already includes several website layouts and templates, which can be adapted and personalized using CSS. It is also possible to create fully personalized papaya templates, but this requires knowledge of XSLT.

Another special feature of the papaya CMS is the use of UTF-8 character encoding. UTF-8 is the most common encoding for Unicode characters and ensures correct representation of characters in all languages.

CMS papaya: accessibility and web standards

Since the CMS papaya is based exclusively on open standardslike PHP, XML and XSLT, it lends itself well to creating accessible websites. The strict separation between content and presentation, as well as the generation of clean and valid markup, constitutes a solid basis for meeting the requirements of the Digital Accessibility Act which came into force in 2025.

However, these standards do not automatically guarantee accessibility. Specific modern features, such as ARIA implementations, accessible navigation schemes or component-based interface logics, must be individually developed. As the CMS does not natively provide these features and the creation of templates requires XSLT skills, the actual level of accessibility strongly depends on the project team, the frontend used and the quality of the implementation.

The key features of the papaya CMS

The papaya CMS offers many basic features, as shown in the following summary:

  • Freely scalable
  • Various cache functions
  • Detailed system of user roles and rights for content management
  • Multilingual content possible without restrictions
  • Creating and managing multiple websites
  • Content versioning possible at any time
  • Comprehensive analysis of usage and activities in frontend and backend via statistics module
  • WYSIWYG Editor
  • Logically structured user interface, usable step by step
  • Media database

In addition, papaya allows you to create websites SEO compliantbecause the standard functions of the program include several search engine optimization tools, such as metadata management, search engine friendly URLs or valid XHTML markup.

Most websites using the CMS are based across the Rhine. However, you can get a first idea by taking a look at the German radio website DRadio Wissen.

Extensions, ecosystem and technical prerequisites

The modules integrated by default into the software can be supplemented by additional extensions, both paid and free. Compared to CMS market leaders like WordPress, Joomla and TYPO3, however, the selection of free plugins remains relatively limited. Free modules are available on GitHub. Specific extensions can be obtained, against payment, directly from the publisher. Other paid services offered by papaya Software include customer support, papaya training, and complete site design and implementation.

Less experienced users generally need support for the configuration and adaptation of their papaya project, because it is a Technically complex CMS. Even developers need to have some prior knowledge. Common editorial tasks, such as creating and editing pages, are an exception and generally require only a brief handling. On the other hand, extending existing modules or developing custom modules requires in-depth skills in object-oriented programming as well as PHP, XML, XSLT and SQL.

Limits and constraints of the CMS papaya

Although the papaya CMS offers many features and benefits, there are some points to consider before using it:

  • Small community: Compared to WordPress, Joomla or TYPO3, the community of developers and users is limited, which limits support, exchanges and the availability of extensions.
  • Limited plugin ecosystem: few free extensions, many modules must be custom developed or purchased from the publisher.
  • Not very suitable for modern frontend frameworks: the classic rendering approach based on XSLT integrates less well with current architectures such as Headless, API or SPA.

In summary: a powerful CMS for demanding projects

Those who do not yet have extensive experience in setting up and administering a complex content management system should not have excessive expectations of the papaya CMS: a Powerful CMS involves certain requirements. Technical skills are also an advantage during installation, which is more complex than some competing software.

However, this should not be a hindrance: users with a solid foundation in configuring and managing content management systems benefit from a powerful tool with the Papaya CMS. However, it is preferable to already have initial experience with the programming languages used by papaya.

The writing andusing an already configured system remain on the other hand easily accessible to novices. As long as the implementation of the web project is entrusted to competent people, web design with papaya CMS offers many possibilities. In addition, the program stands out for its unusual XML and XSLT approach and its ability to meet the requirements of accessible Web design. With this software, the Cologne developers show that a German CMS can compete with established competition.
